In light of the fact that some members have reported seeing illegal fishing I thought I should provide some extra info.

To report unlawful fishing in Queensland, call 1800 017 116

In NSW it's 1800 043 536

For Victorians it's 13FISH. Probably the easiest number to remember.

Do yourselves a favour and put these numbers in your mobiles. Fisheries Officers can't be everywhere and if activity is reported then they can target specific areas accordingly.

Support your sport!

Just thought I'd voice my disapointment with fisheries when it comes to the simple act of manning a telephone, I have tried on numerous occasions to contact them when I have seen illegal fishing practices. Every time being met with an answering service. Sure, I'll leave all the details they request, number plates, time of day, my details, location etc. However, not once have I seen them respond to my numerous calls.
As responsible fishermen we try our best to educate others as to size and bag limits, but when it falls on deaf ears or ends in attempted fisty cuffs, then that is when you rely on an organisation like the fisheries to step in and fine these people. Great in theory, but it doesn't work. Not when the message says "these phones are manned on normal business hours". Um.... most people fish on weekends and at all hours. I don't understand what the use is in giving all the info they require, if by the time they get the message, the 600 50mm fish are already mashed into fish cakes and fried.
Myself and shirebassa went for a spin for a few kings today and couldn't believe it when every fish caught found it's way into a potato bag and into the boot of a car. So I gave the fisheries a call. Ok I'm still waiting to see if they rock up.
Look guys I know they do a lot of good stuff but they also need to be accessible, otherwise why even bother calling.
Sorry fellas just needed to have a rant because It's getting to the stage that I might as well go kick their stuff in the water and do the runner rather than attemp at doing the RIGHT thing.

I read in another thread a while back there is a lady's mobile phone number to call if you cant get in touch with Fisheries.I think i read that she can get in contact with officers to get them to deal with problems.

Can anyone remember this thread and re-post her number??(i've done a search, but could not find the thread.)

As Nick said,it is really frustrating calling Fisheries to be greeted with an answering machine message!!
With the bloke's yesterday keeping undersize King's,they didnt even put them on a tape to check size's!Just straight in the bucket! One bloke pulled one up,a rat of about 55cm,my mate walked over to them with a tape, and then proceeded to be yelled at with abuse for trying to tell them that it was illegal to keep undersize fish. The rule's are in place for a reason,it make's me sick seeing some people blatantly breaking these rule's,and when you try to bring it to their attention, you have to deal with verbal, and or,physical abuse.

Okay,theres my rant!
Cheers, Adam.

Since we are ranting about Fisheries and so on...I amy as well have a go!

Don't aim your frustrations at Fisheries! Aim your frustrations at the government!!!!

The government funds fisheries, and this funding is far less then what fisheries needs to do their jobs properly and effectively! Last time I did some homework on the matter, there were only 7 inspectors for the ENTIRE S.E Qld area. And we sit back and expect the fisheries to be at our beck and call!

To top it off, fisheries has been combimed with the DPI...So now when a situation comes up like the Fish Hatchery/Macadamia Nut farm debacle, how can there be anything but a conflict of interest. Fisheries wants to help the hatchery...DPI wants to help the Macadamia Nut farmer. But its the same organisation! How can that be in anyway logical?

So remember guys and girls...fisheries are doing their best with what they have! Instead of spending your time ranting about a fisheries 'answering machine', how about showing your support and send an email to your local governement about the ridiculous amount of funding that they give to the fisheries dept. Its amazing what happens if enough people push the right buttons!

Leigh.

guys, I understand your point completely. But I'm so frustrated at not being able to do anything to stop these individuals that are blantantly breaking the law. It gets me so fired up and most of the time it feels like I can't do anything about it, everything looks like it's tangled in government red tape. My problem is I have no patience, when I see someone breaking a bag or size limit the very thought of them walking away kills me.
Leigh I took your advise and am writing a letter to the government. cc. the dpi and fisheries. Hopefully some others on this site will follow suit.
So if anyone has been in my position before? get writing.
cheers
Nick

Hey every1, while we're on the subject, i wanted to know your thoughts on something i witnessed in my local tackle store recently. i was searching the fly stuff for something to spend some mullah on when i clearly overheard an employee reccomend to another customer to start fishing for bass BEFORE the season starts, "just scout your spots in daytime and go back at night with rod in hand" he said.

I couldn't believe my ears! i was too gobsmacked to say anything, i just walked out. in hindsight i sooo wish i had said something!

What should i do? should i report it?

There are stil no clear cut rules about not fishing in the closed season. As long as he's not handing out recipes and encouraging people to keep them they're well within their rights to fish.
I have not seen one sign that says fishing is not permitted, only that it's a no take period.

It's up to the individual to do what they feel is right. Whether it's catch and release for the winter or hanging up the rods completely.
